Shanaakt 2009

The Shanaakht Festival 2009, which celebrates the lives of extraordinary individuals who struggled to create this nation, is being held from Nov 9 to 11 right now in Karachi

The festival features on exhibit:

  • Never-before-seen photographs of dashing young men of Pakistan Air Force from 1940 and 1950s
  • Rare photographs of pre-partitioned Kashmir
  • “A man for all seasons” Hashim Raza photogrpahic tribute to one of the first civil servants of the country.
  • original film posters from golden lollywood era
  • snippets of films and songs from the Citizens Archive of Pakistan (CAP)
  • recollections of cinema-lovers
  • film screenings of blockbusters: Koel, Sassi and Armaan
  • a slice of vintage Pakistan in an exhibition of some of the most beautiful vintage cars in the country
  • Sheema Kirmani's thetarical performance in 'Rang Badal Lo Bhai'. a drama which shows how things change colours in our country
  • readings of Pakistani literature in Urdu and English by Fahmida Riaz, Haseena Moin, Ilona Yusuf , Mohammad Hanif and Musharraf Ali Farooqi
  • an evening of musical fusion with popular Pakistani bands joined by traditional folk singers.


The event would be open to schools between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm, while the general public would be able to attend it between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

Shanaakht festival is conducted by the Citizens Archive of Pakistan or CAP. CAP is a not-for-profit educational institution and heritage centre that was established in February 2007 with the aim of strengthening the civil society and giving full rein to the creativity of Pakistanis, allowing them to explore their heritage and history. Their largest projects to date include the Oral History Project and the Government School Outreach Tours, which are part of a wider attempt to showcase Pakistan’s history and celebrate our nation’s achievements.
